A century ago, the proprietors of Villa d’Este hotel at Lake Como recognized a gap in their offerings. Their clientele—comprising prolific authors, renowned composers, esteemed royals, and celebrated entertainers—shared a common passion for golf, yet lacked a course to accommodate their interests during their stays at this upscale Italian retreat.
To address this need, the hotel’s owners established Circolo Golf Villa d’Este, an 18-hole course drawing inspiration from the finest English clubs of its time, and officially opened its doors in 1926. Although the course was sold in the late 1970s by a later generation of owners, it was repurchased recently, aligning perfectly with the celebration of its centennial. This decision focused on enhancing the golfing experience for contemporary visitors rather than fulfilling personal aspirations.

Guiseppe Fontana, the president of Villa d’Este S.p.A., shares his perspective on the sport, stating, “I have never played golf myself but have always found it intriguing. Golf uniquely unfolds in natural landscapes of cinematic allure.”
Despite the serene setting just 30 minutes from the main hotel on the shores of Lake Montorfano, Golf Villa d’Este presents challenges for golfers of all skill levels, including professionals. The course, characterized by its narrow, tree-lined fairways, hosted its inaugural major tournament in 1928. It has since become a venue for the Targa d’Oro, a national competition held 80 times, alongside 12 Italian Opens.

Looking ahead, Fontana aims to celebrate the club’s rich history while ensuring its future success. This goal involves implementing several enhancements that respect the existing charm of the property. Initiatives include investments in sustainability and infrastructure improvements, alongside enticing younger golfers through an internal golf academy. This academy offers group lessons and open events that welcome newcomers. “It provides an entry point that is both contemporary and inclusive, allowing new players to connect with a century of tradition,” Fontana observes.
The culmination of these initiatives will be highlighted during a two-day centennial celebration for Golf Villa d’Este, set for June 20 and 21. This event will welcome club members and specially invited guests, including those who appreciate golf from the sidelines.
