A recently opened safari camp in Africa allows guests to encounter one of the continent’s iconic Big Five species.
Introducing Mount Kenya Rhino Reserve Safari Camp
The JW Marriott has launched a new property within the expansive Solio Game Reserve in Kenya, a 45,000-acre private conservancy. This area boasts vast savannas and strategic waterholes offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. It’s also notable for housing one of Africa’s largest populations of both black and white rhinos, making it a crucial site for conservation initiatives.
At the Mount Kenya Rhino Reserve Safari Camp, visitors can choose from 19 tented accommodations, harmoniously integrated into the vast landscape. Crafted by LW Design, these one- and two-bedroom camps utilize timber and canvas to reflect the surrounding environment. Each unit features a spacious outdoor area equipped with a plunge pool. Inside, guests will find a warm palette of colors inspired by nature, along with locally sourced artisanal elements from places like Kitengela Glass and Safari Bronze.
Adventure awaits outside the camp. Alongside the chance to spot rhinos, guests may encounter leopards, lions, zebras, and over 300 species of birds. Guided day and night game drives offer insight into the wildlife, including nocturnal animals such as spotted hyenas. For a more immersive experience, walking and cycling tours are available, with professional Canon cameras provided for guests wanting to capture the natural beauty. Unique activities include helicopter trips, trout fishing on Mount Kenya, and creative painting sessions at sunset. Guests can also visit the Solio Rhino Orphanage to witness the rehabilitation process of rhino calves.
On the culinary front, the camp features an on-site garden producing fruits, herbs, and vegetables, allowing for fresh dining experiences among the natural surroundings. The main restaurant, Mavuno, presents seasonal dishes infused with local Kenyan flavors, while the Ember Bar and Lounge offers a casual environment for shared plates and drinks. Guests looking for a unique dining experience can indulge in meals under the stars or beneath the acacia trees.
Wellness is integral to the camp’s offerings. A selection of treatments is available, or one can opt for the half-day Solio Passage experience, focused on rejuvenation through volcanic stone therapies and hydrotherapy soaks. Guests can also unwind in the serene pool area, around the fire pit, or in the library and games room after a day of exploration.
Rates at Mount Kenya Rhino Reserve Safari Camp start at $1,499 per person per night, including full board dining, game drives, and transfers from the Nanyuki airstrip.
