One particular bottle stands out in the narrative of luxury whisky: The Fine and Rare 1926. This exceptional bottle, which shattered the $2 million mark at auction, has profoundly influenced The Macallan’s status as the most coveted Scotch whisky in the world.
Limited Release of the 1926
Only 40 bottles of this extraordinary vintage were produced. Each was reserved for private clients over an extended period, never appearing on the open market. The first known transaction in 1987 saw the bottle change hands for a groundbreaking $8,000. Since then, it has been auctioned for over $1 million on eight occasions, particularly gaining momentum since 2018.
Impact on the Industry
“It debuted as the priciest offering available and has never relinquished that title,” explains Jonny Fowle, Sotheby’s global head of spirits and the auctioneer for the bottle’s last sale in 2023, which fetched $2.7 million. “The 1926 holds a formidable position within the industry. Each sale garners headlines.”
A Benchmark for Future Releases
Decades later, the 1926 remains The Macallan’s most significant asset and serves as the gold standard for its new offerings. Enter the Romantica Collection, showcasing a 1986 vintage positioned as the rightful heir to the legacy of the brand’s most prestigious bottle.
Craftsmanship and Nostalgia
Romantica is crafted from the same exceptional quality as the 1926, aged in a first-fill sherry-seasoned oak cask. The year 1986 holds a sentimental value, as it marks the start of maturation for this whisky, coinciding with the extraction of the 1926 from Cask #263.

The label design further emphasizes this connection, as the renowned trio of artists—Sir Peter Blake, Valerio Adami, and Michael Dillon—returns to create a unique collection of labels for each of the limited 86 bottles. While Dillon continues to be vibrant at 68, Sir Peter and Adami have reached their 90s. How did The Macallan inspire them to revisit their creativity?
Capturing Artistic Legacy
“The discussion was straightforward,” states Jaume Ferràs, global creative director. “Peter and Valerio are thoughtfully reflecting on their legacies. This collaboration, 40 years after 1986, resonates deeply and provides a nostalgic opportunity to enhance their artistic contributions.”
While recreating the allure surrounding the bottle was manageable, achieving the same extraordinary quality within it posed a challenge. Many elements that distinguished the 1986 vintage were singular and impermissible in today’s market. Fowle remarks, “Back in 1986, a 60-year-old whisky was extraordinary, as The Macallan had only released its first 50-year-old expression three years earlier.”

A New Era for The Macallan
Today, collectors are becoming increasingly accustomed to older whiskies, with records for the oldest Scotch being surpassed multiple times recently, including twice by The Macallan itself. The 39-year-old Romantica does not solely rely on its age for value, which means lead whisky maker Euan Kennedy faced a unique challenge.
“Our whisky-making team evaluates every single cask by the time it reaches eight years old,” Kennedy explains. “Interestingly, even at that young age, we earmark a select few for future storytelling, despite not yet knowing what their narrative will entail.”
“When we embarked on the 1986 project, there emerged a singular standout. Once you sift through the older inventory, options dwindle significantly. The flavor we sought dictated we focus on one specific cask.”
On the nose, Romantica reveals layers of stewed orchard fruit and ginger, complemented by a subtle hint of tropical lychee. The palate unfolds with peach, dark cherry, and aged oak, all capped off by a delicate touch of peat smoke—a nod to a bygone era since The Macallan ceased using peat in its production in 1988.
Collectible Potential
Offered at a price of $105,000, the Romantica Collection is expected to attract The Macallan’s distinguished clientele. Of greater interest will be its performance within the secondary market. “I adhere to strict guidelines for collecting,” Fowle notes. “Is the brand reputable? Is there transparency? How limited is the offering? What’s the quality?”
“Quality-wise, I found it impressive,” he concludes. “With only 86 sets available, that’s remarkably rare even by Macallan standards. This fulfills the demand for authentic scarcity, enhancing its collectible appeal.”
As for the legacy of the 1926? “This release is more of a tribute to the ’86 than a competitor to the ’26,” Fowle asserts. “The 1926 remains an unparalleled icon; should it ever surface at auction again, it’s likely to shatter records.”
