In a surprising turn of events, it appears that BMW’s ambitious plans to introduce a competitor to the iconic G-Wagen have been scrapped.

The German luxury automaker has officially halted the development of the anticipated G74 SUV, as reported by BMWBlog. Originally envisioned to be a rugged model designed for off-road enthusiasts, this vehicle would have taken direct aim at the Mercedes G-Wagen but has now been shelved.
Background of the G74
The project had generated excitement as early as spring 2024, with reports emerging that BMW was crafting a vehicle akin to the G-Wagen, as well as competing with the Land Rover Range Rover. Initially codenamed the G74, the design was set to derive from the fifth-generation X5 and was expected to focus significantly on off-road capabilities. However, a year later, Automotive News indicated that this 4×4 might include an internal-combustion engine and potentially replace the XM within BMW’s SUV lineup.

Despite initial enthusiasm for the G74 project, BMWBlog now reveals that the automaker has chosen to discontinue it. The decision appears to be financially driven, as BMW assesses the luxury off-roader market and determines that the investment necessary for a new vehicle may not be justified.
When consulted on the situation, a representative from BMW shared with Robb Report: “As a matter of policy, we do not comment on speculation regarding future product plans.” Notably, throughout the previous two years of discussions, BMW neither confirmed nor denied the existence of the G74.
While the G74 may never come to fruition, the latest iteration of the X5, which the G74 was envisioned to be based on, will soon be gracing American roads. Set to launch with three distinct models—the gas X5 40, the hybrid X5 50e xDrive, and the electric iX5 60 xDrive—the starting price will be $71,250, with deliveries scheduled to commence in December.
