Stepping aboard Aqua Nera for my three-night voyage last fall felt less like boarding a cruise and more like checking into an exclusive five-star retreat. Each spacious suite, inspired by the surrounding black water lagoons, is appointed with sleek furnishings, dark-stained wooden floors, California king beds, bespoke stone sinks, and rejuvenating walk-in rain showers. Floor-to-ceiling windows, paired with cozy daybeds, allow guests to immerse themselves in the tranquil beauty of the Amazon as it flows by. One afternoon, while relaxing post-massage, I was thrilled to witness a pod of endangered pink river dolphins leaping joyfully in the shimmering waters.
With a limited number of guests onboard—maximum two per cabin—I found myself daydreaming of having the entire vessel to myself. In my downtime, I could unwind in the dedicated screening room, play pool in the billiards area, or savor the splendid views from the river-front gym. Occasionally, we had the unique opportunity to gather our own ingredients; one day, our guide taught us how to catch piranhas using nothing but a simple branch, some string, and a piece of raw meat.
Memorable Expeditions
The adventures were endless. Guided by Aqua Nera’s knowledgeable naturalists, we boarded one of the three skiffs for daily excursions. We visited remote villages, searched for elusive sloths in the treetops, swam with pool noodles in the crystal-clear waters, and illuminated the night sky to catch glimpses of caimans’ eyes glowing in the dusk. Among the highlights was a surprise breakfast orchestrated by our guide, Alex. The chef and his team delivered individual picnic baskets filled with freshly baked pastries, granola, sandwiches, and chilled mimosas, creating an unparalleled dining experience in the heart of the Amazon. Away from the noise of civilization, we indulged in nature’s tranquil embrace—a true definition of luxury.
