At the age of 30, the decision to undergo a preventative bilateral mastectomy came after learning about the BRCA2 gene, which substantially increases lifetime breast cancer risk. This choice, recommended by medical professionals, was likened to carrying an umbrella in a forecast of 86 percent chance of rain. The concern was not if cancer would arise, but rather when.
The surgery performed in London marked the start of her recovery journey. Physical healing progressed well, though it was not without its challenges. Reports of nerve reconnections, discomfort, and the need for adjustment post-surgery were duly noted. Such experiences typically accompany major medical interventions.
However, years later, the aftermath of surgery revealed deeper struggles, particularly surrounding intimacy. Concerns about the visibility of scars, the need for communication with partners, and the potential changes in sensation lingered long after physical healing had occurred. Themes of identity and belonging emerged, as she questioned her place within her own body and feelings of impostor syndrome in light of never having faced a cancer diagnosis.
Throughout the healing process, emotional support was abundant, yet the topic of sexuality remained largely overlooked. Discussions surrounding wellness often center on physical health, neglecting the complex ties between major surgeries and intimacy. Despite visits to various wellness retreats and clinics, this crucial aspect of recovery seemed to be lost. A need for deeper exploration than traditional wellness services could offer became clear.

In 2025, the Zem clinic in Spain caught her attention with its multiple divisions focused on sexual health. It left her questioning societal norms regarding sexual wellness, which often takes a backseat to other aspects of health. While visiting the clinic for different services, feelings of embarrassment prevented her from seeking help in the area she most needed.
Her arrival at Miraval in Arizona, a renowned wellness retreat, brought mixed emotions. The atmosphere, while rich in promise, felt daunting as guests were instructed to set intentions for their stay and strike a gong as they began their journeys.
The first session, titled Optimize Your Sex Life, led by veteran educator Lyndi Rivers, brought together a diverse group. Individuals and couples opened up about their motivations for being there, setting the stage for vulnerable discussions.
When her turn came, tears surfaced unexpectedly, marking the start of a shared experience among participants. This emotional outpouring revealed how frequently such revelations are encountered in similar sessions.
Focused on relationship dynamics, the session addressed topics like mismatched libidos and the importance of communication. While informative, the discussions often catered to couples and their unique challenges, leaving her questions about individual experiences largely unaddressed.
Exploring Personal Experiences
The women-only session, Pleasure: Women, Sex, and Desire, marked a significant shift. Participants were open and candid about their various backgrounds and reasons for attending. Stories of recent changes in relationship status, grief, and sexual exploration were shared, revealing a common thread of seeking understanding.
As she began to speak, emotions overwhelmed her again, and the group offered support. These connections provided a safe space to discuss sensitive topics often clouded by shame or unspoken barriers.
The session fostered conversations about body changes due to aging, motherhood, and medical interventions. Participants acknowledged the need to integrate moments of non-sexual pleasure into everyday life, fundamental to rekindling intimacy.

At the conclusion of both sessions, printouts were provided. One with extensive guidelines and a Sexual Temperament Questionnaire aimed to normalize the conversation around intimacy and make emotional exploration feel more systematic.
She noted an instinctual tendency to reach for her phone as a form of distraction during sessions. Yet being at Miraval in a device-free environment compelled her to sit and reflect, leading her to confront feelings she had buried. The absence of distraction allowed difficult thoughts to surface, challenging her perceptions of healing.

Daily activities included indulgent spa treatments, invigorating hikes, and sessions designed to tackle deeper issues. Guests were frequently in search of answers to personal dilemmas rather than mere relaxation. Stories of transformation echoed throughout the retreat.
Unexpected moments of release came during experiences like Reiki treatment, which facilitated a mixture of laughter and tears as emotional healing occurred. Such moments emphasized the importance of vulnerability in fostering emotional wellbeing.
In one-on-one discussions, she discovered the empowering nature of setting intentions and the active role she must play in her recovery journey. Conversations surrounded grief and acceptance of her new reality post-surgery.
The path to healing was recognized as ongoing. The return of confidence in her body, shaped by strength-building activities like CrossFit, marked a shift. Yet, parallels were drawn between physical strength and the vulnerability that genuine intimacy requires.
Confidence and ownership of one’s body remain vital to navigating intimacy post-surgery. The realization that discussing these topics is not indulgent but necessary was pivotal. There was value in acknowledging shared struggles and the lightness that could come from openly discussing such experiences.
Miraval proved insightful, allowing the expression of feelings often kept hidden. While no neat resolution emerged, the release of burdens carried silently offered a different kind of closure.
Programs at Miraval Arizona start from $799 per night.
