Venice continues to capture attention, especially with a wave of notable hotel openings set for 2026. Amid this buzz, the Cipriani family emphasizes their deep-rooted history in the city, dating back nearly a century to a tranquil island far from the tourist throngs.
The Cipriani legacy began with Harry’s Bar, established by Giuseppe Cipriani Sr. in 1931. However, it was in 1936 that he transformed a quaint wine shop on Torcello Island into an inn, or “locanda,” designed for those who valued seclusion. While Venice often overshadows lesser-known locales, Cipriani recognized the unique charm of Torcello, rich in medieval architecture and home to the Byzantine Cathedral. Over the years, it has attracted a diverse array of guests, from Queen Elizabeth II and Winston Churchill to Nicole Kidman and Elton John. Notably, Ernest Hemingway took refuge here for months while penning his novel, Across the River and Into the Trees.

This unique ambiance is preserved with a recent renovation led by Giuseppe Cipriani, the founder’s grandson and current CEO of the Cipriani Group. He emphasizes a commitment to maintaining the hotel’s character while enhancing its features. In collaboration with Fabrizio Cocchi Studio, the refurbishment aims to restore the site’s essence, incorporating elements inspired by the island itself. Cipriani expresses a desire for the interiors to generate a connection with the surrounding landscape, letting the lagoon and gardens take center stage.

The inn, once limited to six rooms, now offers ten accommodations, including four newly added suites. This intimate setting enhances the feeling of a personal retreat. Rooms feature dedicated living spaces and terraces that overlook the gardens and the nearby Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta. To brighten the atmosphere, historic ceiling beams have been painted white, while high-gloss wood paneling is complemented by handblown glass fixtures sourced from Murano.

Beyond the guest accommodations, enhancements include a new bar counter—a signature of the Cipriani dining experience—as well as reimagined dining and common areas that promote connection and comfort. The gardens have been revitalized with roses, flowering plants, and vegetable plots, complemented by a vine-covered pergola supported by pink marble columns.
