The Lansdowne Club is poised to celebrate a significant chapter in history as it commemorates the 250th anniversary of American independence this July. This exclusive Mayfair club invites Luxury Restaurant Guide members to participate in two distinctive events that explore the Anglo-American connection.
On July 17, members will gather for an evening of insightful discussions, champagne, and a curated dinner. The following day, attendees will embark on a guided walking tour that highlights London’s links to America, concluding with lunch at the club itself.
This theme is rooted in local history. Lansdowne House, the establishment’s former name, served as the London residence of Lord Shelburne, the Prime Minister who liaised with Benjamin Franklin during negotiations that culminated in the Treaty of Paris in 1783. This treaty formally recognized the United States as independent, marking a pivotal moment in the evolution of British-American relations. Franklin, a close companion of Shelburne, often convened in what is now known as the Club’s Round Room Bar, a circular space rumored to have influenced the design of the Oval Office.
The Treaty of Paris, signed in 1783, not only concluded the American War of Independence but also accepted the United States as a “free sovereign and independent state.” This shift acknowledged the end of Britain’s imperial dominance in North America.

The involvement of figures like Mark Carney highlights the ongoing transformation of political landscapes. Reflecting on the moment Britain grappled with America’s newfound independence provides insight into the shifting dynamics. The Lansdowne Club stands on the site where much of this historical dialogue occurred, unveiling a significant chapter in its narrative this July.
