A Family Adventure in the Maldives

When families seek the ideal getaway in the Maldives, they often find themselves navigating the diverse offerings of its 1,200 islands. Each island presents unique experiences that can satisfy a range of preferences, making it essential for families to carefully choose accommodations that cater to everyone’s needs.

<p>A family trip to the Maldives became a reality for one family as they planned a journey to create lasting memories before the older children embarked on their individual paths post-college. The anticipation was palpable, and after returning from their trip, they shared valuable insights on selecting the right resorts.</p>

<p>Planning a journey to this remote paradise requires meticulous attention. With the group's limited time and the Maldives' numerous islands—only about 200 of which are inhabited—strategic choices were vital. They decided on two distinct resorts within the same atoll to enhance their experience.</p>

<p>Starting their journey from Chicago, they cleverly avoided frigid weather by flying to New York and then onward to Doha, Qatar, before landing in Male, the capital of the Maldives. A scenic seaplane ride transported them to <a href="https://www.vilamendhoo.com/">Vilamendhoo Island Resort and Spa</a>, their first stop in the South Ari Atoll.</p>

<p>With diverse interests among the children, each with unique desires for the trip, they found Vilamendhoo appealing. The oldest, being scuba-certified, required excellent dive and snorkeling conditions. The quest to swim alongside whale sharks was another goal. Favorably, Vilamendhoo boasted one of the top house reefs in the region, fulfilling their adventurous spirit.</p>

<p>The arrival at Vilamendhoo was marked by a warm greeting from the staff, who offered refreshing drinks and cool towels. One of their rooms was ready, allowing the family to quickly change and immerse themselves in the island's beauty. Staying in over-water bungalows heightened the experience beyond expectations.</p>

<p>The resort features family-friendly beachfront villas and adult-only zones, where they found their accommodations. This setup allowed them to enjoy the amenities, including multiple dining options and festive holiday activities. They wasted no time and rented snorkeling gear from the dive shop. Excursions for whale sharks, turtles, and manta rays were booked, alongside a complimentary sunset sail.</p>

<p>Each morning commenced with snorkeling right from their bungalow, venturing towards the reef marked for guests. They encountered vibrant sea life, including stingrays and sharks. An especially memorable moment was a serene encounter with a sea turtle, which lingered nearby for a while, providing a magical kickoff to their daily rituals.</p>

<p>After their daily snorkeling sessions, the family enjoyed breakfast and various amenities available, including sport facilities and spa services. One highlight was an evening sunset cruise, where they witnessed dolphins showcasing their playful acrobatics, much to everyone’s delight. Swimming with gentle whale sharks and the occasional manta ray was awe-inspiring.</p>

<p>Following four days of activity and celebration at Vilamendhoo, they transitioned by speedboat to their next destination, the <a href="https://www.luxresorts.com/en/maldives/hotel/luxsouthariatoll">LUX* South Ari Atoll</a>. This choice ensured they didn't lose a day in transit, taking advantage of the close proximity of the resorts.</p>

<p>At LUX*, the family was welcomed similarly and settled into their over-water bungalows. While they understood this resort would offer a more lavish atmosphere with various activities, they appreciated the broader family vibe. Morning surprises awaited as bottles containing messages and gift certificates were hidden throughout the property. The range of dining options also catered to diverse tastes.</p>

<p>The absence of a reef at LUX* was mitigated by organized excursions to nearby snorkeling sites. Additionally, aquatic activities such as paddleboarding and jet skiing entertained guests. The variety of amenities ensured everyone remained engaged during their stay. With sadness, they bid farewell to LUX* when it was time to depart.</p>

Each resort offered their unique charm while splendid service fueled genuine connections among guests and staff. For families, identifying priorities in advance can help streamline decisions about which resorts and atolls will optimize their experience.</p>

<p>Ultimately, visiting two different resorts allowed for a well-rounded vacation, offering diverse experiences that enriched the family's time together. A successful family adventure? Certainly.</p>
