Sale e Pepe, a fixture of London’s dining scene since 1974, has expanded its horizons. Originally established in Knightsbridge, this beloved Italian restaurant has welcomed numerous distinguished visitors, including George Clooney. The brand’s latest venture, Sale e Pepe Mare, recently opened at The Langham on Portland Place, conveniently located less than five minutes from Oxford Circus.
The restaurant occupies what was once the Roux at the Landau, following the short-lived Mimosa. The interior design marks a significant shift from prior establishments. With warm wood paneling and a palette of burnt orange and soft blue, it exudes a nostalgic yet contemporary charm reminiscent of la dolce vita. Elements such as timber, marble, and brushed brass enhance the inviting atmosphere. Large bow windows, adorned with café-style curtains, provide a glimpse of the vibrant city while ensuring a sense of intimacy.

Upon arrival, guests are often led to the coveted tables by the windows, which provide an excellent view of the surroundings. The ambiance reflects its diverse clientele, from lively business discussions to intimate family dinners.
The culinary offerings showcase the richness of Italy’s coastline, from Amalfi to Puglia, heralded as “an ode to life by the sea.” With seafood as a centerpiece, signature dishes include the frutti di mare, featuring calamari, langoustines, prawns, scallops, mussels, and oysters. Guests are encouraged to explore the menu further, with recommendations such as the capesante al forno—Josper-baked scallops paired with chili, lemon, parsley, and garlic butter—and the gamberi scottati, warm red prawns simply dressed with Amalfi lemon and olive oil, along with seasoned Dover sole.

A hallmark of Italian dining is the engaging tableside preparation, and Sale e Pepe Mare delivers with dishes like Caesar salad, bucatini cacio e pepe, and risotto made right before guests. The dessert trolley, featuring house-made tiramisu, adds a final touch of indulgence to the meal.
The beverage selection enhances the overall experience, offering an array of Italian wines complemented by a cocktail menu that harkens back to vintage aesthetics. The cucumber martini, a refreshing concoction of Grey Goose vodka, cucumber, lime, apple cordial, and black pepper, stands out as a crisp option. For those seeking a digestif, the restaurant boasts an impressive collection of amaro, or guests can venture to the Artesian bar within the hotel for a nightcap.
