He regards exercise as foundational to maintaining brain vitality, adhering to a consistent routine that includes one hour on a stationary bike and 45 minutes of bodyweight workouts, such as push-ups and core exercises, three mornings a week. Every Friday, he embarks on a longer cycling journey that spans between 60 to 100 miles and incorporates walking into his daily activities.
On a cellular level, physical activity spurs the growth of mitochondria—cellular powerhouses. Increased muscle stimulation leads to the release of myokines, which enhance BDNF, a vital element for developing new neurons in the hippocampus, crucial for learning and memory. Evenings vary; deadlines may require work, but many nights are spent with his wife engaging in dance, movies, card games, or leisurely walks when the weather permits. Their social calendar is often full, with activities on weekends accompanied by one or two glasses of wine, as moderate consumption poses no significant risk to brain health.
Prior to sleeping, around 10 or 11 pm, he dedicates time to reading and practicing slow breathing exercises. Aiming for seven to eight hours of sleep, he recognizes the risks associated with inadequate rest and the potential harms of excessive sleep. When nighttime awakenings occur, he advises avoiding restlessness; instead, sitting up and engaging with a book or jotting down thoughts may facilitate a return to sleep.
