The launch of the 2027 New Zealand Michelin Guide marks a significant milestone as the esteemed restaurant directory makes its debut in Oceania.
In curating its New Zealand edition, Michelin focused on four main culinary hubs: Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Queenstown. Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the Michelin Guide, expressed excitement about the guide’s introduction, stating, “The country offers a rich and diverse culinary landscape, shaped by its indigenous Māori heritage, Pacific influences, and a new generation of chefs who champion local produce with creativity and passion.”
Before the awards were announced, observers speculated on how Michelin would approach New Zealand’s dining scene, which favors a more relaxed atmosphere rather than formal fine dining. The local dining culture is significantly influenced by the Māori principle of ‘Manaakitanga,’ emphasizing warm and respectful hospitality. This focus on informality may explain why New Zealand remains without a restaurant boasting three Michelin stars. Only one establishment, Essence in Queenstown, earned two stars, while 14 received one star.
Among the new one-star restaurants is Tala in Auckland, offering a Samoan-inspired tasting menu. Owner and executive chef Henry Onesemo commented, “Michelin coming to New Zealand is great for the hospitality scene and the focus it will bring on NZ cuisine at an international level. I have always thought New Zealand cuisine was of a world-class standard, and with Michelin it will finally be recognized as such.”
Another Auckland restaurant, Paris Butter, also earned a star. Chef and co-owner Zennon Wijlens noted, “While the restaurant scene in NZ is relatively young compared to the rest of the world, it is definitely punching above its weight. The arrival of Michelin is super exciting not only for the hospitality industry but for NZ as a whole.”
Other new one-star establishments include Tussock Hill in Christchurch, Kika in Wānaka, and The Estate on Waiheke Island. Amisfield, a winery restaurant in Queenstown known for its prior accolades but recently marred by controversy, also received a star, highlighting Michelin’s discretion in award decisions.
The ceremony recognized 35 restaurants with a Bib Gourmand, an accolade for offering quality food at reasonable prices.
Surprisingly, New Zealand secured its Michelin Guide before Australia, despite the latter’s expansive international travel and a well-established dining scene. This development is a testament to how tourism boards can influence Michelin’s presence, with funding potentially paving the way for new guides.
The launch of New Zealand’s inaugural Michelin Guide comes on the heels of the country’s first Michelin Keys award, which honored 19 distinguished hotels, including Rosewood Cape Kidnappers, Blanket Bay, and The Lindis.
